Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, the body that oversees international football, is now clear of the accusations against him after Swiss prosecutors abandoned their criminal investigation against him today, October 26.
In August 2020, FIFA’s ethics committee concluded its preliminary inquiry and found that Gianni Infantino had not broken any regulations, before the prosecutors hauled him before a Swiss court.
A lawsuit alleging a secret meeting between Infantino and Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber was launched against him in July 2020.
Prosecutors said that Infantino violated office policies by meeting with Lauber and that the Italian-Swiss football official assisted and abetted wrongdoing.
The accusations brought against Infantino, according to the Swiss prosecutors, have been “invalidated,” they said earlier today.
The Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland was not “instrumentalized,” they claimed, into “unusual, inexplicable, erroneous or even criminal acts or omissions,” according to their study.
Infantino released a statement in response to the events, stating, “This is a full and clear victory for me, for the new FIFA, and for justice.”
It is now evident that the charges leveled against me were only attempts to damage my name by destitute, jealous, and dishonest individuals. These folks ought to at least have the grace to own up to their mistakes and apologize for the harm they caused, assuming they still possess any dignity at all.
“The investigation firmly and unequivocally demonstrates that I have consistently acted lawfully and correctly, always defending the interests of Fifa and football,” the statement reads.
