The manager of Montpellier, Michel Der Zakarian, expressed his surprise at Nigerian striker Akor Adams’ goal-scoring ability.
Akor Adams is currently tied for second place in the French Ligue 1 highest goalscorers chart after scoring five goals in eight league games.
Remember that Adams initially moved on loan to the Norwegian second division team Sogndal in 2018 after leaving Nigerian lower league team Jamba FA?
His 23 goals in just 38 Eliteserien games accelerated his promotion to the top flight.
Lillestrom and Thomas Lehne Olsen made a great offensive duo. His physicality presented challenges for his opponents’ defenses as well.
He proved he was a goal scorer in his final season in Norway, recording 17 goals and three assists. Montpellier paid €4.5 million for his services during the summer transfer window.
The 23-year-old former Nigeria Under-20 striker has established himself as a key player on coach Der Zakarian’s squad after joining the French Ligue 1 outfit.
Only Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain (8 goals) has scored more goals in the French Ligue 1 thus far this season than Akor Adams (5).
Together with Mostafa Mohamed of Nantes, Wissam Ben Yedder of Monaco, and Mousa Al-Tamari of Montpellier, his teammate, they are tied for second position.
Prior to their league match on Sunday, October 29 at 3 p.m. against Toulouse, Montpellier’s manager expressed to the media the club’s surprise at Akor Adams’ goal-scoring form.
“We were surprised to see him score right away, but that’s football,” he remarked. Both Andy Delort and Elye Wahi spent an extended period without netting a goal.
We anticipated that adjusting to Adams would take some time. He must adjust, but others must as well; they have to desire to play with him. We reviewed the game against Rennes and saw that although he made a lot of strong runs, he wasn’t fed. Players with the ball should be aware of their surroundings and eager to pass it to the man in behind them.
Montpellier is currently three points outside of the relegation zone in 15th place in the league table with 8 points from 8 games, despite Akor Adams’ outstanding goal-scoring form.
